2012 Seattle Mariners Top 20 Prospects: Based on Card Values

1) Jesus Montero =

Key Card: 2008 Bowman Draft Chrome Refractor Auto #/500

Current Value: Beckett  $150/eBay $80

Projection: After being traded from the largest market of New York, Jesus Montero’s prices surprisingly stayed about the same. 2012 will be Montero’s first true chance to show everyone why he is one of the game’s elite prospects. Unless he puts up a ROY type season, look for his already high stock to keep steady if not drop a bit.

2) Danny Hultze

Key Card: 2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Auto #/642

Current Value: Beckett $50/eBay $35

Projection: Being an overall number two pick in the draft, Danny Hultzen’s prices started high and they should only continue to rise throughout spring training. Stock will keep on climbing like 2011 Pineda did if he breaks camp with the Mariners, if not it will jump once he does break into the majors. Whether it’s his 2011 EEE or his 2012 Bowman, Hulzen’s stock will only grow in 2012.

3) Nick Franklin

Key card: 2010 Bowman Chrome Refractor Auto #/500

Current Value: Beckett $30/eBay $25

Projection: Nick Franklin’s prices dropped last year after he took a bat to the face and they have yet to reach 2010’s highs again. 2012 could bring an MLB call-up to Franklin; look for his stock to only rise as he reminds everyone why he is one of the premiere shortstop prospects in the game.

4) Alex Liddi =

Key Card: 2010 Bowman Chrome Refractor Auto #/500

Current Value: Beckett $25/eBay $12

Projection: Alex Liddi’s stock rose slightly last year once he was promoted to the Mariners, However  he is not the long term option at third base. Unless Liddi finally learns to lower his strikeout rate, he is a utility player with pop. Look for his prices to stay steady or slowly drop over time.

5) Taijuan Walker

Key Card: 2011 Bowman Sterling Base Auto

Current Value: Beckett $20/eBay $14

Projection: The young, raw and very athletic Taijuan Walker dropped many jaws last year during his first pro season. With a lot of room to grow and the potential to be a true ace, Walker’s stock is sure to keep rising. If he remains dominant in 2012, look for Walker’s base autos to climb up to the 30-60 dollar range. Taijuan could be at the top of this list and a top 5 MLB prospect by this time next year.

6) Carlos Peguero =

Key Card: 2010 Bowman Chrome Refractor Auto #/500

Current Value: Beckett $15/eBay $8

Projection: Like Liddi, Carlos Peguero’s prices also rose with a promotion to the Mariners last year. He showed some tremendous power, but also like Liddi, struck out way too much. The power alone could make Peguero stick in the MLB, just as it has for Mark Reynolds. Look for Peguero’s stock to stay steady in 2012.

7) Carlos Triunfel

Key Card: 2006 Just Rookies Auto #/200

Current Value: Beckett $15/eBay $N/A

Projection: Once touted as Seattle’s top prospect, Carlos Triunfel has lost some shine over the past few years. 2012 could be that “make or break” year for him, however he is still very young especially for the advanced AAA league. If he can continue to grow like he did in 2011 and remind everyone of his name and his 5-tool potential his stock will begin to rise once again.

8) Chance Ruffin =

Key Card: 2010 Bowman Draft Chrome refractor Auto #/500

Current Value: Beckett $12/eBay $6

Projection: When Chance Ruffin was traded to the Mariners in 2011, his stock was double what it is now. His prices dropped as soon as he was demoted to AAA due to poor control. Ruffin has the stuff that can lead him to a power closer’s role though relievers prices rarely skyrocket. Look for his stock to climb back to last year’s values once he lowers his walks enough to make it in the bigs.

9) Rich Poythress

Key Card: 2010 Bowman Platinum Auto

Current Value: Beckett $15/eBay $3

Projection: Rich Poythress, the most polished of the Mariners’s power hitting first base prospects, currently has a very small collectors’ market. Poythress could be traded in the future since first base is most likely locked up at the major league level for quite some time. If he can continue to grow, look for Poythress’s stock to rise slowly or jump quickly if he is traded to a larger market team.

10) John Hicks =

Key Card: 2011 Donruss Elite Extra edition Auto #/1156

Current Value: Beckett $12/eBay $4

Projection: Drafted in 2011, John Hicks could have been that “new hope” for the future Mariners’s catching position that all Mariners fans have desired since Dan Wilson. However, this notion was quickly put to a halt when the Jesus Montero trade went down. Now in the shadows, this defense oriented backstop can grow his skills with little pressure. Look for Hicks’s stock to keep steady through 2012.

11) Vinnie Catricala

Key Card: 2011 Bowman Refractor #/799

Current Value: Beckett $12/eBay $3

Projection: The first prospect on this list without an official autograph in circulation, Vinnie Catricala should probably be up a little higher. The tenth round pick has come out of nowhere and completely destroyed pitching at all levels that he has played. A recent move to the outfield due to suspect defense at third will not inhibit his course to the majors. Catricala is looking more and more like a pure hitter, his stock will continue to rise as he does.

12) Cavan Cohoes =

Key Card: 2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Auto #/784

Current Value: Beckett $10/eBay $4

Projection: Probably the most interesting prospect drafted by the Mariners in 2011 is shortstop Cavan Cohoes. Being drafted out of a high school on a military base in Germany, very little is known about this kid. Currently Cohoes’s prices reflect this uncertainty; we can expect his stock to stay fairly steady throughout 2012 as he starts his pro ball career.

13) Brad Miller

Key Card: 2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Auto #/495

Current Value: Beckett $10/eBay $4

Projection: Drafted in the second round of the 2011 draft, Brad Miller is a shortstop who can hit for average and play solid defense. His market is currently flooded with both Upper Deck and Bowman USA autos from his days with the national team. This has kept his stock low, look for prices to start climbing as Miller gets close to a potential September call up in 2012.

14) Francisco Martinez

Key Card: 2011 Topps Heritage Minor League Auto #/861

Current Value: Beckett $10/eBay $3

Projection: Coming from the Tigers in a trade during 2011, third baseman Francisco Martinez is another 5-tool prospect in the Mariners’s system who has yet to put it all together. Martinez’s prices are too low for someone with such high potential, with a solid start in AAA this year his stock will only climb. Look for prices to at least double during the year.

15) Chih-Hsien Chiang

Key Card: 2009 Bowman Chrome WBC Refractor #/500

Current Value: Beckett $12/eBay $1

Projection: Acquired in the Eric Bedard trade of 2011 from the Red Sox, Chih-Hsien Chiang is a solid offensive force. Chiang earned Eastern League player of the year honors for his time spent with the Red Sox’s AA affiliate, however he lost some shine after the trade due to a prolonged slump. If Chiang can return to his old self in 2012, look for his stock to rise as he gets closer to the major leagues.

16) Nate Tenbrink

Key Card: 2010 Bowman Platinum Auto

Current Value: Beckett $12/ebay $1

Projection: Never considered an elite prospect, Nate Tenbrink has been all but lost in translation since younger more advanced prospects began stepping in front of him on the depth chart. Tenbrink’s stock will unfortunately only continue to drop.

17) Adam Moore

Key Card: 2009 Bowman Chrome Refractor Auto #/500

Current Value: Beckett $12/eBay $1

Projection: With pressure to be the Mariners’s future catcher in 2010, Adam Moore could never really put it all together in the majors. His stock plummeted to the floor in 2011 when he had season-ending knee surgery. Now Moore is left fighting to resurrect his pro career with little hope of making it back to the Mariners starting nine. Unless he can regain his form from 2009 his prices will stay rock bottom.

18) Marcus Littlewood =

Key Card: 2010 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Auto #/825

Current Value: Beckett $10/eBay $2

Projection: Drafted in 2010 as a shortstop, Marcus Littlewood is now being converted to a catcher in the depths of the Mariners’s farm leagues. Littlewood seems to have an advanced offensive approach but the switch to catcher will slow his progress up the ladder. Look for Littlewood’s stock to remain steady in 2012 as he begins to learn the most complicated defensive position.

19) Forrest Snow =

Key Card: 2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Auto #/685

Current Value: Beckett $8/eBay $4

Projection: Coming out of nowhere in the second half of 2011, Forrest Snow quickly advanced to AAA while raking up the Ks. Unfortunately, as a starting pitcher he is blocked on the depth chart by many more attractive throwers. Look for Snow’s stock to stay close to where it is now, a relief role is likely in his future if he wants to play in the big leagues.

20) Trayvon Robinson =

Key Card: 2005 Bowman Draft Chrome Refractor

Current Value: Beckett $8/eBay $2

Projection: Like Catricala, Trayvon Robinson would probably be higher up this list with an official auto. Robinson got an extended look in the majors during 2011 after a trade from the Dodgers — he is not ready. If Robinson wants to be a major leaguer he will have to improve his pitch selection. Look for his stock to stay steady as he works to refine his approach in 2012.
